Pain Management

Relieving Discomfort With Medicine and Compassion

Pain Management at Penfield Veterinary Hospital

Whether the pain is from illness, injury, or recuperating from surgery, our goal is to manage, minimize, or eliminate your pet’s pain. At Penfield Veterinary Hospital, we will provide the highest quality of care to alleviate your pet’s discomfort. We will also teach you methods and pain relief options to use at home.

Preventing Pain

We never want to see an animal in pain, which is why pain management and prevention is one of our main concerns at Penfield Veterinary Hospital. Because pets instinctively hide pain, it’s important to know what to look for in case your cat or dog requires help. Common symptoms include:

  • Excessive licking or biting
  • Lethargy
  • Limping
  • Loss of appetite
  • Panting
  • Reluctance to move or jump
  • Hiding
  • Howling, whining, or other abnormal vocal cues
  • Changes in behavior (e.g., growling or overt aggression)

Changes in behavior, such as growling or overt aggression, may also be indicators of pain. If your pet displays any of these signs or has experienced a recent trauma, please contact us immediately.

Dental & Surgical Procedures
While dental cleanings are generally painless and fairly uncomplicated, other procedures (such as extractions) are potentially painful. In such cases, we control pain through prevention rather than treatment. Local anesthetic injections (nerve blocks) are used to keep your pet from ever experiencing pain. If we anticipate discomfort at home, we can also prescribe various analgesic medications for your pet.

For all surgical procedures and for the treatment of chronic conditions, our team will design a pain management plan that is tailored to the needs of your pet.
